It’s Fall and Casa Catherwood is delighted to announce: Catherwood Excursions! 

These Day Trips are designed to allow you the extraordinary opportunity to embark on adventures led by authorities in their fields.  This Fall we are proud to have David Bacab, trained at the Ornithological Lab at Cornell University and the Institute for Bird Population at Yosemite National Park lead three Day Trips.  It is not every day that one can have one of the world’s leading authorities on the birds of the Yucatan peninsula guide you to Ria Celestun or the habitats around  Uxmal. 

Ria Celestun requires that you are physically fit, and the other two are designed for all individuals regardless of their physical condition.  Tell your friends and gather your groups: Each Day Trip is limited to eight individuals.

El otoño ha llegado y Casa Catherwood se complace en anunciar: Excursiones Catherwood!

Estos Excursiones de Día están diseñados para permitir la extraordinaria oportunidad de embarcarse en aventuras dirigidas por reconocidas autoridades en sus campos. Este otoño estamos orgullosos de contar con David Bacab, entrenado en el Laboratorio de Ornitología de la Universidad Cornell y el Instituto de las Poblaciones de Aves en el Parque Nacional de Yosemite, para que diriga tres Excursiones de Día. No es todo el tiemp que uno cuenta con un experto sobre las aves de la península de Yucatán reconocido por todo el mundo como su guía para excursions a para Ría Celestún, y otro a las ruinas de Uxmal.  

Ría Celestún requiere que usted está físicamente en forma, y los otros dos están diseñados para todas las personas independientemente de su condición física. Comparta de esta oportunidad con sus amigos y reuna a su grupo: Cada Excursione de Día se limita a ocho individuos.

Observación de Aves en la Reserva Natural Ría Celestún.

Temprano en la mañana viajaremos al Parque Nacional Ría Celestún, hogar del flamenco del caribe y también de mas de 300 especies de aves residentes y migratorias, la combinación de selva tropical, manglares y vegetación de duna costera nos permitirá descubrir una gran variedad de aves tropicales, acuáticas y playeras. No importa cuanta experiencia tengas, sea un experto en la identificación de aves o solamente un principiante, nuestro guía experto en aves pacientemente nos conducirá a identificarlas y  nos conducirá por ese maravilloso mundo de los pájaros, desde los diminutos y veloces colibríes hasta los grandes gavilanes. Durante nuestro recorrido aprenderás, conocerás y descubrirás la apasionante vida de las aves, la observación de aves es una actividad que no requiere ningún esfuerzo físico para realizarla. El mejor momento para ver las aves es temprano en la mañana cuando están mas activas, unas cuantas horas no serán suficientes para identificar las mas de 300 especies que viven dentro de esta Reserva, pero será una gran experiencia que estamos seguro volverá a repetir.

Notas. Cualquier persona en buena condición física puede participar. No hay ningún riesgo ni esfuerzo físico.

Hora de salida. 6:00 am.

Descanso al medio día para comer, esto es por cuenta de cada participante.  Ropa ligera y zapatos cómodos.

Toalla y ropa extra si algunos desean nadar, gorra, lentes, bronceador, repelente ecológico.

Incluye: Transporte, guía especializado, desayuno picnic, aguas y golosinas durante el viaje.

No incluye: propinas y almuerzo

Birdwatching in the Ria Celestun Nature Reserve.

Early morning travel to the Ria Celestun National Park, home of Caribbean Flamingo and over 300 species of resident and migratory birds, in a setting that includes rainforest, mangroves and dune coastal vegetation which will allow us to discover a great variety of tropical birds, waterfowl and shorebirds. No matter how much experience you have, whether you are an expert in identifying birds or just a beginner birdwatcher, our bird expert guide will patiently lead us to identify and show us by the wonderful world of birds, from tiny hummingbirds to large fast hawks . During our tour you will learn  and discover the exciting life of birds, bird watching is an activity that requires no physical effort to perform. The best time to see birds is early morning when they are most active, a few hours will not be sufficient to identify more than 300 species living within the reserve, but will be a great experience we are certain repeated.

Notes. Anyone in good physical condition may participate. There is no risk or special physical effort.

Departure Time: 6:00 a.m.

We will stop at noon for lunch, the cost of which is up to each participant (pack your lunch). Light clothing and comfortable shoes are suggested. Towel and extra clothes are advised if you want to swim, bring your own swim cap, sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent.

Excursion includes: transportation, specialized guide, breakfast picnic, water and snacks during the trip.

David Bacab

 A native of Celestun, David is the founder of Celestun Expeditions.  His university degree is in Tourism Administration.  His studies in natural sciences have included courses and workshops in Mexico and United States: At Cornell University in New York he studied at the Ornithology Lab, subsequently at the Institute for Bird Populations in  Yosemite National Park and then with the Wildlife Service in Michigan. 

He has participated in marine turtle conservation projects, environmental education programs, and has been an active conservationist in his home community. He is actively involved in avian studies throughout the Peninsula of Yucatan, including banding and monitoring bird populations and distribution studies, training local people for work at the various reserves. His professional career is his passion and is centered on Ecotourism.

Since 1989 he has lead dozens of natural history tours, including groups from Nature Conservancy, National Geographic photographers, Victor Emanuel Nature Tours, Field Guides and professional Mexican photographers and many groups from conservation organizations.

David has written articles on Ecotourism in different publications such as the Journal of PRONATURA, A.C., the Miami Herald (with a version focused on Cancun).  Articles about David have been written in Wild Bird Magazine, Living Bird Magazine, Winging It —a supplement of the Birding Magazine of the American Birding Association — Business Week Magazine, and national newspapers in Mexico such as the Financier and local press such as the Diario de Yucatan.
