Venetian Masks for Carnival!
Venetian masquerade masks are a centuries-old tradition of that originated in Venice, Italy. Often worn during the Carnival of Venice – Carnevale – it is a quintessential aspect of Mardi Gras in that city.
Venetian masquerade masks, however, are also worn at balls and galas, and the idea was to disguise the wearer’s true identity, and to break barriers between social status. The wearer was able to act more freely and less inhibited, often interacting with members of society with whom he or she would have otherwise very little interaction in everyday convention.
Casa Catherwood has received a shipment from Si Lucia in Venice, the premier purveyor of Masquerade Masks.
For more than nine generations, the Lucia family has been designing and creating these exquisite masquerade balls and their clients have included everyone from Popes to the Medicis, from Marie Antoinette to Madonna, from the Duke and Duchess of Windsor to Princess Grace.
